Chicago Comic Con runs Aug. 8-11 at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, 5555 N. River Rd. Hit the panel talks and workshops, walk the trade floor, attend film screenings and meet celebrities such as Stan Lee, Zachary Quinto, Wil Wheaton, Morena Baccarin, John Barrowman, Tara Strong, DMC, Ralph Maccio and more. The cost of single day passes vary by day; today's are $50. A four-day weekend pass costs $90, or spring for the $250 VIP package, which gets you in an hour early each day as well as other goodies. Many celebrity meet-and-greets are ticketed separately. The convention runs from noon to 7pm today.
The Mary-Arrchie Theatre Co. presents the 25th annual Abbie Hoffman Died for Our Sins theater festival, beginning tonight at 5pm with a march from Daley Plaza to the Den Theater, 1333 N. Milwaukee Ave., and continuing for 72 hours straight beginning at 7pm. Dozens of acts will perform. Tickets are $10 per day (get today's here) or get a three-day pass for $25.
The Michael Davis Life Fund, benefiting a Rogers Park resident who was beaten with a bat while walking home, holds a fundraiser tonight at Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Morse Ave., tonight beginning at 5:30pm. There will be a raffle and silent auction, as well as performances by musicians Obisoulstar, The Fruit Flies and Yvette Renee, National Poet Winner Roger Bonair-Agard, dancers Phoenix Rising Chicago and burlesque artists Boobs Radley and Phaedra Black. Tickets are $25 online or at the door.
The Old Town School of Folk Music holds its monthly First Friday this evening at 6:00pm. Free classes, dance lessons, and evening concerts are offered in the school's new building at 4545 North Lincoln Avenue. Admission is $5 for individuals and $10 for families. On the second Friday of every month, the 30-or-so galleries and creative spaces in the Chicago Arts District at Halsted and 18th streets open their doors to showcase art and artists from Chicago and the world. The opening receptions begin at 6pm and last officially until 10pm, letting viewers get up close with the art and artists for free. Maps are available at the information center at 1821 S. Halsted St.
The Appleseed Cast play two nights at the legendary Fireside Bowl, 2648 W. Fullerton Ave., Thursday and tonight. Des Ark, Heartscape Landbreak open. Tickets are $20. Doors open at 8pm, show's at 9pm. 18+
The Music Box Theatre presents a week-long festival of Alfred Hitchcock's early silent films, only nine of which have survived. The films will be screening with musical accompaniment by the Music Box's resident organis Dennis Scott, as well as by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. Live Lit on the Lake is curated and hosted by Ian Belknap, founder and host of WRITE CLUB, which features a rotating lineup of Chicago's most audacious writers/performers at Theater on the Lake (2401 N. Lake Shore Drive.) Each week performers from storefront theater literary series read from their favorite pieces, and discuss the craft and practice of live lit with the host. August 8 & 9 featured readers include: SHANNON CASON, Moth Story Slam grand champion, featured on NPR's Snap Judgment, DANA NORRIS, founder of Story Club, and SAMANTHA IRBY, founder of Guts & Glory, blogger at Bitches Gotta Eat, and author of forthcoming collection of essays, Meaty.
