The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8 at several venues in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. More than a dozen performances of theater, sketch comedy, spoken word and other experimental works stage tonight, beginning at 7pm; see the schedule for details. Admission buttons are $5 (they're required to get into any show); tickets are $10 per show. You can also buy five- and 10-ticket packs for $45 or $80, respectively, or go to everything for $180.
Come to the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan Ave., tonight for Story Club. The theme this month is "addiction," and features readings by the author of "Wasted" and "Waiting", Marya Hornbacher, a man who's constantly learning, Dennis Frymire, and author Fabrice Lubin. In addition there are open mic slots for storytelling hopefuls. Open mic signup begins at 7:30pm, show begins at 8pm. Free, 21+
Dave Foley of "Kids in the Hall" and "Newsradio" fame is doing three nights of standup at UP Comedy Club, 320 W. North Ave., Sept. 5-7. Tonight's show is at 8pm; doors open at 7:15pm. Clark Jones opens, Charlie Bury emcees. Tickets are $25 online or at the door. 21+
Kartemquin Films presents Drinks in Progress tonight at 8pm in the upstairs lounge at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave. Meet Kartemquin filmmakers and staff, view clips from the upcoming film Unbroken Glass, and enjoy a drink or two. Admission is $25, and includes one drink and a souvenir Unbroken Glass pint glass. 21+
Curbside Splendor celebrates its fall releases with Words+Music, an evening of readings and music tonight at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., at 9pm.
