The second annual EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, opens for the fall art season at Navy Pier's Festival Hall (600 E. Grand Avenue). This three day convention features a broad spectrum of modern and contemporary artwork from over 125 top international galleries. Studio Gang Architects' Jeanne Gang designed this year's clever floor plan, patterned after Chicago's gridded streets and lined with gallery exhibitions. The 2013 redesign also includes EXPO VIDEO, featuring modern and contemporary video artwork. 11am - 7pm. One day pass is $20 and three day weekend pass is $30.
Cooking Matters brings together the city's longest chuck wagon to benefit Share Our Strength today at Kendall College, 900 N. North Branch. Your $5 admission gets you cooking demos, live music curated by Empty Bottle Presents, and of course, access to food trucks (5411, Tamale Spaceship, etc.) and restaurants (Publican, endgrain, Puffs of Doom, etc.). Event runs 11am-10pm.
Ever wonder if the wines produced in Illinois are any good? Vintage Illinois is your chance to find out! Over 25 wineries across the state will be pouring their finest wines in picturesque Matthiessen State Park. There'll also be entertainment and food vendors at the festival, and guests can bring their own food. Pets are welcome. The festival runs from 11-6 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. Tickets are $20 for wine tasters and $5 for designated drivers. Tickets available here.
The Englewood Jazz Festival runs Sept. 19-21 at the Hamilton Park Cultural Center, 513 W. 72nd St. Today's festivities run from noon to 7pm, and feature performances by Taylor Moore Trio with special guest Margret Murphy-Webb; Live the Spirit Youth Ensemble, Residency Ensemble and Senior/Advanced Band; the Great Black Music Ensemble; the Henry Johnson Trio; and Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble with special guest Billy Harper. Free shuttle bus service is available today from the Chicago Cultural Center downtown and the South Shore Cultural Center. Admission is free, but donations encouraged.
Craft beer (lots of it -- from places like Revolution, Begyle and Off Color), live entertainment, and shopping make up Andersonville's City Made Fest, which runs today and Sunday on Clark Street between Argyle and Carmen, from noon to 9pm. $5 suggested donation.
The first annual Logan Square Beer Festival is today at the Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie Blvd. Sample over 50 beers from more than 20 breweries, enjoy live music and pick up brewery swag like t-shirts and coozies. The fest is open from 2 to 5pm, with VIP access beginning at 1pm. General admission is sold out, but VIP tickets are still available for $55. 21+
The DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th Pl., presents "Gallery Talk with Charly Palmer," today from 3pm-5pm. Palmer will discuss "Charly Palmer: The Dream Lives On," his visual art exhibition that was inspired by the 1963 March on Washington. Admission is free; reservations are required.
