National Sandwich Day @ Duran European Sandwiches

National Sandwich Day takes place on Nov. 3, but West Town's Duran European Sandwiches Cafe, 529 N. Milwaukee Ave., keeps the celebration going all weekend long as a charity fundraiser benefiting Chicago Artists Coalition. On both Saturday and Sunday, 50% of Duran's total profits will be donated to support the organization, which assists local artists and creative entrepreneurship. The Duran space will also transform into a gallery, hosting artwork from some of the city's most recognized geometric abstraction artists. Saturday from 8am to 5pm; Sunday from 9am to 3pm.

Culinary Memoir and Personal Essays @ Kendall College

Author Peggy Wolff (Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie) talks about the emergence of food literature today at Kendall College, 900 N. North Branch, from 10am-noon. Authors Carol Mighton Haddix and Melanie Benjamin will also be reading. Event sponsored by Culinary Historians of Chicago; admission $3. Email to RSVP.

SOFA Chicago @ Navy Pier

The 20th annual SOFA Chicago, an art fair devoted to "Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design," runs Friday through Sunday in Navy Pier's Festival Hall. Works from nearly 70 galleries from across the US and around the world will be on display. Hours are 11am to 7pm Friday and today and noon to 6pm Sunday. General admission tickets are $15 per day or $25 for a three-day pass. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

Gapers Block Microbrewery Crawl

The Gapers Block Microbrewery Crawl is back, taking you inside four of the city's microbreweries for a tour and a taste. This time we begin at Lake Effect Brewing, 4727 W. Montrose Ave., and continue on to Finch's Beer Company, Metropolitan Brewery and DryHop Brewers, after which you're free to stick around and have dinner, keep drinking or make your way to the next pub. More details in Drive-Thru. Transportation is included between destinations; you're on your own afterward. The crawl is limited to 60 participants. Tickets are $45 in advance, or at the door if any remain. Registration opens at 11:30am, tour begins at noon. 21+

Chicago River Bridges Talk @ Irving Park-Austin Library

Author Patrick T. McBriarty will give a slide show and talk about his new book, Chicago River Bridges, today at 2pm at the Irving Park-Austin branch of the Chicago Public Library, 6100 W. Irving Park Rd. The book and accompanying DVD will be available for purchase; the talk is free.

Half Acre Charitable Chili Cookoff

The fifth annual Half Acre Charitable Chili Cookoff is tonight at 5pm at The Arts of Life Chicago Studio, 2010 W. Carroll Ave. For $15, sample meaty and veggie chili from all the competitors, enjoy Half Acre beers. Proceeds benefit The Arts of Life, a nonprofit arts program for adults with disabilities.

Mannequin Men @ Empty Bottle

The Mannequin Men announce their triumphant return by headlining the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., tonight, with Meat Wave and Rainbow Gun Show opening. Hozac Records DJs spin before and between sets. Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door, which opens at 9:30pm. 21+

College of Complexes: Free Speech Forum @ Lincoln Restaurant

College of Complexes, "the playground for people who think", holds a Free Speech Forum on social issues and current events every Saturday at Lincoln Restaurant (4008 N. Lincoln Avenue). This week's topic is 'Expecting More From Public Officials' with guest speaker Marc Loveless, a candidate for Chicago City Council Clerk campaigning under the slogan "We Can Do More!". Forum starts at 8pm. $3 tuition with purchase of food/drink.

Mark Fell @ Graham Foundation (Lampo)

Electronic musician and composer Mark Fell will make his Chicago debut tonight at 8:30pm, presenting new tonal works based on his tenure at the legendary Electronic Music Studio (EMS) in Stockholm. Combining academic approaches to electronic music with more popular techno and electronica, Fell's music is rich in details and fascinating to a wide audience. The performance is free with RSVP at the Graham Foundation's Madlener House, 4 W. Burton Pl. The performance is part of Lampo's Fall 2013 season.
