Filmmaker Jan Thompson talks about her recent release Never the Same: The Prisoner of War Experience (which made a stop in Chicago earlier this year) and curiously, how American POWs in Japan curated recipes as a stress-reliever during their captivity today Kendall College, 900 North Branch, 10am-noon. Event sponsored by the Culinary Historians of Chicago.
If meat doesn't do it for you, the Alliance Francaise (54 W. Chicago) hosts a cooking class today from 10am-1pm to take you to the other side, especially when meat-heavy holidays approach. Chef Madelaine Bullwinkel will teach you to make a proper gratin, chili, and cassoulet (among others). Admission $70-80, with an additional $15 materials fee.
Vintage Garage's annual Holiday Market is today and Sunday at 1134 W. Granville Ave. from 11am to 6pm. Browse through antiques, collectibles, clothes, art and more. There will be an ugly holiday sweater contest, and you can meet Danielle Colby Cushman of "American Pickers" at 1pm today. Admission is $5.
Chillfest puts more than 100 bands and solo performers in more than 30 nontraditional venues -- salons, boutiques, restaurants, etc. -- throughout Wicker Park and Bucktown for live acoustic performances between noon and 5:30pm today. All the shows are free; see the schedule for details.
The Museum of Broadcast Communications, 360 N. State St., hosts the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" 25th Anniversary Reunion today at noon. Original cast members Joel Hodgson, Joel Coniff, Trace Beaulieu and Josh Weinstein will be in attendance for a panel discussion moderated by Steve Darnall, and clips from the cult classic TV show will be aired. Tickets are $12.
Artist and Northwestern professor Pamela Bannos explores the history of the land the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave., in a series of four gallery talks in connection with the exhibition The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology, beginning today at 3pm with one on 1863 through the Chicago Fire. The Polish Film Festival in America runs Nov. 8-24. Films screen at Facets Cinematheque, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave., Gallery Theatre, 1112 N. The Chicago Cinema Society and Little Cabin Films present a special sneak preview of Vannin': The Movie, a new documentary on conversion van subculture, tonight at the Patio Theater, 6008 W.
