Mike Nourse and Marta Sasinowska's Looking For: New Works at Salvage One

looking2.jpg

Familiarity featuring Lauri Apple, Writer/Artist

We all know the feeling. Job-hunting can be the most daunting, soul-sucking, ego-crushing activity that all must at some point endure- these days especially. Mike Nourse and Marta Sasinowska's collaborative project, Looking For: New Works, captures this tumultuous and timely experience through photographs of people looking for work, which have been transferred onto the glass of salvaged windows. Nourse and Sasinowska collected resumes from their subjects and asked one simple question- "what are you looking for in life?" In doing so, they managed to wade through the hopelessness of searching, to find and capture peacefulness in possibilities, and the thrill of eventually finding.

Each window encased, gel-transferred photograph presents one individual who is looking for work, as well as something more meaningful in life, and are titled accordingly. Fulfillment, Balance, Growth, Collaboration, and Adventure are all titles and poignant reflections of the journey of each individual. The pairing of the simply composed, black and white images with the found frames adds dimension and personality to the idea of looking for something.

Looking For: New Works is being held at Salvage One- a salvaged architecture shop that is littered with artifacts and unique architectural elements that were saved from demolished buildings. The space, which begs for exploration and is brimming with possibilities, is the perfect reflection of the spirit of Nourse and Sasinowska's work.

This show has been dedicated to the late Chris Hales, aka DJ Tapedek- the subject of the photo titled Peace. Hales passed away tragically several weeks ago, and the image was chosen after his death. The serene expression of a man lost in his music is a touching inclusion by artists who clearly became closely tied to the people they presented through this series.

Looking For: New Works by Mike Nourse and Marta Sasinowska, can be viewed on Fridays from 11-6, Saturdays from 11-5 and Sundays from 11-5 until April 25.
