Second City Takes to Sea
I recently took a weeklong hiatus from Chicago to cruise to Bermuda with my family and Chicago followed me all the way to the Atlantic Ocean! Second City, Chicago's famous improvisational comedy troupe is in the middle of a four-month contract with the cruise boat I ventured out on- the Norwegian Dawn. On a boat dominated by East Coasters-- New Jersey and Long Island accents a-plenty-- I was so excited to see these hilarious Chicagoans on the list of entertainment for the week.
They performed three big shows over the course of four days at sea. The first was a scripted set of short skits. These were charming and simple but left me itching for the improvised material they're known for.
On the second to last day at sea, I got my wish with two shows-- one geared towards adults with plenty of dirty humor for the theater of boozy cruisers, and another PG version for the kiddies. The younger crowd loved the rock-opera game that required comedians to begin each musical line with consecutive letters of the alphabet, all the way from A-Z. It was great to show my family something Chicago in such an unexpected location. If you happen to be cruising this summer, Second City will be with several Norwegian ships cruising to varied locations for the remainder of the season.
