Chicago Still Loves I Still Love H.E.R. (atributetohiphop)
There is no denying the impact of hip hop in today's society; what was once deemed by many as a passing fad has evolved into a global cultural phenomenon that is embraced by fans all over the world. And with rappers like Chicago natives Common, Lupe Fiasco and Twista, the Windy City has certainly made a mark in the industry, as well.
Despite its phenomenal status, however, hip hop often gets a bad rap; for South Side native and hip hop lover Wendell Tucker, a few bad notes are not enough to stop loving it.
Now in its sixth season and fresh off an appearance at the National Black Theatre Festival this past summer, the hip hop musical I Still Love H.E.R. (atributetohiphop), written and directed by Tucker and choreographed by Jeremy Noah, will again hit Chicago to tell the story of a radio personality who, after much confliction over the current state of hip hop affairs, decides to dedicate his final on-air broadcast to the music he loves. With a diverse range of hip hop music serving as the backdrop, the show will also explore social themes in hip hop including violence, feminism, and media influence on the industry.
Catch I Still Love H.E.R. (atributetohiphop) at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport, Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 11-12; all shows are at 7pm. Tickets are $17-$22 and are on sale online, the box office, or by phone at 773-935-6860.
