Sticks and Stones in Pilsen
Remember the controversial interview I posted with Rebecca Beachy a couple years ago? You know... the artist who was making hats out of roadkill? Well, she's graduated now and she's got a solo show opening this Sunday (7-10pm) at Roxaboxen Exhibitions in Pilsen, brought to you by ACRE exhibitions.
Beachy's work has developed and matured gracefully over the past few years and it bridges a few gaps between art and natural science quite nicely. Although a few ignorant people have accused her work of being vile or disrespectful, it's actually quite the opposite; it calls attention to the ways humans consume animals, and asks us to reconsider:
The work, concerned with the damaged interstice between the wild and human structures, articulates physical engagement as an ethical gauge, positioning meaning as resting first in the material and the concrete. This sculptural presence is used to foreground questions regarding humans as animals, especially the question of the human relationship with gravity and mortality, and hopes to show the complexities in the interconnections between animals, people, and the ground on which both meet, collide, and dwell.
Nature lovers, take notice. Haters, stay home.
