$10 Million Gift for the MCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA) today announced a gift of $10 million from Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson. Long-time supporters of both the arts and the MCA, Edlis also serves as an officer of the MCA Board and an MCA Trustee. Edlis led the museum's Collection Committee from 2004 to 2008. Neeson serves on the Exhibition Committee.
In 2000, Edlis and Neeson gave a major gift to establish the Edlis/Neeson Art Acquisition Fund that has enabled the MCA to acquire significant works for the collection, including Maurizio Cattelan's Felix (2001), Thomas Schutte's Ganz Grosse Geister (Big SpiritsXL) (2004), Jenny Holzer's For Chicago (2007), and Olafur Eliasson's Your eye activity field (2009).
In honor of their extraordinary gift, the MCA's theater will be named the Edlis Neeson Theater. A source of contemporary local, national, and international dance, theater, music, and other performing artists and speakers, Edlis and Neeson's gift highlights the continued importance of the MCA and it's wide variety of cultural voices.
In a press release from earlier today, Edlis said, "Supporting the MCA by naming the theater was important to us because it is a beautiful space for innovation and experimentation that was designed with the audience's experience in mind."
Upcoming performances in the Edlis Neeson Theater include red, black and GREEN: a blues from Marc Bamuthi Joseph/The Living Word Project with Theaster Gates and Drastic-Classicism, GAGA-Gaku, and The Watteau Duets from Armitage Gone! Dance.
