Weekend Art Pick: Rusty Shackleford Dream Feeder & Katie Torn Dream House @ Roots & Culture

This weekend, if you can only go to one art opening, go to David Sprecher's Anchors on Sunday -- his second solo exhibition at Peanut Gallery. He has built a false wall and is playing with perception subtly through various methods, and his playful approach to art making combined with his personal investigation into the human body and spirit makes for a compelling exhibition. BUT, because of my personal involvement with Peanut Gallery I may be biased, so I'm going to give you another option.

Rusty Shackleford Dream Feeder & Katie Torn Dream House

How about some colorful prints, paintings, arrangements & video work loosely based on nostalgia and technology at Roots & Culture?

Rusty Shackleford's
lush work is inspired by the dated grain and colors of found images. He uses pages from books and magazines as backgrounds for his recent scanner-based experiments with color, light, paint and discard.

Katie Torn's work employs 3D computer software used for Hollywood films and commercials to create virtual sculptures that reflect her observations on American consumerism, technology, and its impact on the body. Inspired by Cubism and Futurism, art movements that strived to find new ways to express life in the industrial age, Torn's use of digital technologies channels life in an age where interacting in a virtual space is an everyday activity.

The opening reception for Dream Feeder and Dream House is tonight, Friday October 18 from 6 to 9pm at Roots & Culture Contemporary Art Center (1034 N. Milwaukee Ave.).

As always, don't forget to check out The Visualist for more listings, too!
