Weekend Art Pick: HATCH Projects' Twelve Variations
Hatch Projects was just nominated by Newcity as the "Best Opportunity for Emerging Artists" because of the impressive critical infrastructure the Chicago Artists Coalition has built around the studios it houses to support its resident artists' practices and careers. It promises regular contact with curators, critics, collectors and arts administrators... even a solo exhibition for each member. To see what has come of it, head over to the CAC in the West Loop tonight for Twelve Variations.
The concept of the show is quite novel -- in order to define a broader milieu for her group of artists, curator Jessica Cochran has paired each of the six HATCH residents with a non-resident artist with whom they share a strong link in the form of a shared thematic orientation or conceptual framework. In some cases the artists may be from different generations or geographic areas and most often they utilize entirely divergent artistic mediums. The resulting exhibition should not necessarily be a show of "paired works" but a group exhibition full of new associations: twelve variations.
Twelve Variations features HATCH Projects Residents Kristina Felix, Johana Moscoso, Jessica Bardsley, Kristin Nason, Rebecca Hamlin Green, and Victoria Bradford. Additional works by Vesna Pavlovic, Stephanie Brooks, Ronny Quevedo, Allison Reimus, Scott Fortino and Dianna Frid.
The opening reception for Twelve Variations is tonight, Friday November 1 from 6 to 9pm at 217 North Carpenter St. Here's the Facebook invite.
