Water, water, everywhere / And all the boards did shrink /
Water, water, everywhere / Nor any drop to drink.
These famous lines from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's classic poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," come near the beginning of this tale of a sailor returned from an eventful sea voyage.* The Phantom Collective will present a staged reading of the Coleridge poem at 7:30pm Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Haymarket Pub. The reading will be preceded by an original theater piece, "Ripple," about being lost at sea.
"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" features Si Osborne, Steve Pickering and Adrianne Cury and is directed by Osborne. "Ripple" features Amy Montgomery. Music will be provided by Tom Kastle, a singer-songwriter who specializes in traditional maritime music.
The staged readings will run about 90 minutes. Admission is $15 cash or check; pay at the door. Haymarket Pub & Brewery is located at 737 W. Randolph St.; call 312-638-0900. For information on parking, see the venue's FAQs page.
Partly inspired by pub theater, the Phantom Collective is a grassroots group that sponsors music, staged readings, theater pieces and music programs at various venues around town. Some of its recent events were "A Damp, Drizzly November in My Soul: A Tribute to Melville's Moby Dick," and a musical and literary tribute to Bruce Springsteen on his 65th birthday.
