Hubbard Street Celebrates William Forsythe in Fall Dance Series
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago opens its 38th season this week. This year's fall series revolves around one man: William Forsythe. Three pieces of Forsythe's choreography make up the program.
N.N.N.N. gets its U.S. premiere in the show. The piece features four dancers tangled and tussling, the interplay of their bodies leading the movement.
Hubbard Street first performed the second piece, Quintett, in 2012. Quintett is Forsythe's expression of love for his late wife.
Lastly, the company premieres One Flat Thing, reproduced. The explosive piece involves 14 dancers exploring and relying on the responsiveness, flexibility and speed of each other.
"It is a complicated puzzle," said Hubbard Street dancer Penny Saunders in a video. "It's different than any other work that I've done in that it's movement for movement's sake." Saunders said the dance is set to no music, with no specific emotion, for a fascinating piece. You can watch her entire interview here.
