Shiner Followed Me Home

I just got back from SXSW Interactive down in Austin, and what did I happen to spot in Time Out when I got home but an ad that looked suspiciously like a Shiner Bock label. Shiner, for those unaware, is sort of like Austin's Old Style, the "official beer" of the city which most locals don't actually like all that much. It's not too different from Old Style to my tastebuds, either — maybe a little tarter, but otherwise solidly simple, basic beer.

The ad included a URL: ShinerChicago.com. Go there and you find three pages of information that add up to one thing: Shiner will be available in Chicago starting April 16, in yet-to-be-determined bars across the city. Expect a big to-do, a la Fat Tire, to begin shortly.

Did you get to eat any Rudy's BBQ while in Austin? It tastes good with Shiner Bock. Mmmmm. Beer and barbecue.

Funny -- I've been avoiding Shiner because most of the bars down in Austin have Fat Tire.

Meghan: No, I did go to Ironworks, though.

Well I'm pretty damn excited...good or bad, they've been brewing Shiner Bock since before anyone even knew what a dark beer was. And yes, Shiner and BBQ can't be beat!!

Well, today's the day and there's no Shiner in site . I figured it should be a) updated on www.shinerchicago.com, and b) ala Fat Tire, be widespread at local watering holes. None of the above. Texas bar Field House (who used to carry it unofficially) doesn't have any info if they're getting it, and the website says the same thing it said when I first checked it 6 weeks ago. OK, another call and it IS in stock at Binny's on Clark. Success!

BTW, Meghan, growing up in San Antonio Rudy's was a regular stop and still is when I go back to TX.

Have you heard about Shiner's secret website for Chicago residents? You get free Shiner Chicago stuff when you sign up. Not sure if the site is still active or not, as they were only allowing a limited number of people to sign up.
