Heartburn Hotel
As we approach the thirty-year anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, I'm sure we are all going to be subject to excessive media tributes to the King of Rock and Roll, but no gesture will honor Elvis's contributions more than the sugar-laden Collector's Edition Reese's Peanut Butter and Banana Creme "Elvis Cups."
Bananas are an easy fruit to replicate in artificial form, as displayed by the many foods it flavors; everything from liquers to Twinkies has a believable if not eerie relationship to the real thing. The banana flavor of the Elvis Cup is a subtle layer of yellow filling that does not borrow too much from the FD&C Yellow No. 5 family. Ironically, the banana flavor is not bold, but adds a light, fruity note to the rich and overwhelming chocolate and peanut butter powerhouse that dominates the candy. The combination of flavors worked, but not well enough for the Elvis Cup to be memorable in the long run. But he'll always be the King...of crazy food preferences. Price: $1 for 2 cups at Walgreen's (also available online).
