The Simpsons in the Suburbs
As you know, in preparation for the Simpsons movie, which is opening this Friday, several 7-11 stores nationwide were picked for a temporary facelift into Homer's beloved Kwik-E-Mart to promote the film, among them the store at 6754 West 63rd Street, near Midway Airport (aka Nowhere Near My Place). I headed down there this past weekend to soak in the atmosphere and eat donuts.
My friend and I approached a very busy place that hardly resembled a normal 7-11; the place is a tourist destination, not a convenience store. The parking lot was full. Hordes of people were camped out front, taking their pictures next to the hilarious Bank of Springfield sign, as well as a life-size image of the Comic Book Guy that was attached to the wall.
Inside, one wall had been completely overtaken by Simpsons merch: talking bottle openers, board games, books, and a huge display of Buzz Cola. The best part was the donut display case, overstuffed with cake donuts with pink frosting and sprinkles, Homer's favorite food. I washed down the perfectly made donut with a "Squishee." People who were buying the merchandise as if it was going out of style. Which it apparently isn't.

Hey! That's not the suburbs! That's the south side of chicago. It's about time the south side got something like this.
