Apple pie of your eye

I've been a fan of Hoosier Mama Pie Company ever since my mom (a Hoosier mama herself) brought a few of their pies to our house for a party. She's promised me a few more for a barbeque we're having this weekend, and while perusing their site to determine what flavors I could look forward to, I noticed they have a page dedicated to their favorite quotes about pies. There are some great ones up there, all of which will certainly put you in the mood for pie (if you're not in the mood already). A couple to whet your appetite:

"In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe."
- Isaac Asimov
"But I, when I undress me
Each night, upon my knees
Will ask the Lord to bless me
With apple-pie and cheese."
-Eugene Field

The Field poem is actually just part of a much longer piece, called Apple-Pie and Cheese, itself just one of many lengthy food-themed poems he wrote. A selection of them can be found on this page by Michael Gilleland. They're all amazing. I'll leave you with this gem, a stanza from his paean to Rare Roast Beef:

Most every kind and role of modern victuals have I tried,
Including roasted, fricasseed, broiled, toasted, stewed, and fried,
Your canvasbacks and papa-bottes and mutton-chops subese,
Your patties à la Turkey and your doughnuts à la grease;
I've whiled away dyspeptic hours with crabs in marble halls,
And in the lowly cottage I've experienced codfish balls;
But I've never found a viand that could so allay all grief
And soothe the cockles of the heart as rare roast beef.

I can't believe they don't have this pie quote, from a SNL skit with Alec Baldwin, where he's eating in a diner and flirting with the waitress:

"You shouldn't go givin' away your pie before breakfast. Makes you look cheap!"

Drinking in Buenos Aires

By Gemma Petrie

In May I traveled to Buenos Aires and spent a week eating and drinking in South America's second largest metropolis. Many guidebooks are quick to peg Argentina as the place to drink Malbec. While this is true, Argentina has much...
