Paying Full Price at La Tache
This past weekend, I was hoping to use my NPR member card for the first time. This valuable little piece of plastic came with a guide listing all the restaurants where I could flash it to get a free second entree (of equal or lesser value than the first, of course.) Some restaurants have restrictions on the deal, obviously, but many claim to accept the card "anytime." Unfortunately, there are also some restaurants who claim to accept the card anytime (at least according to the guide) but in practice, do not. Unfortunately, La Tache is one of these restaurants.
When we mentioned we'd like to take advantage of the discount, our server said the chef would not accept the card on the weekends. Needless to say, we were disappointed. However, I have nothing else bad to say about this restaurant. I ordered the bouillabaisse, the Friday night special, and found it delicious. The scallops, shrimp and skate were bathed in a flavorful broth and cooked perfectly. The serving sizes are not gigantic, but I appreciate such restraint in a country where humungo everything is now the norm. And the server did feel bad enough about denying our member card to offer us a free dessert: a rich, warm chocolate cake with ice cream and raspberry sauce. You can bet I'll be going back for more, on a week night... and I'll be bringing my member card.
