Lunching at Winberie's
On a recent (relatively) warm winter day, my mom and I ventured out to Oak Park to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio. When it came time for lunch, we headed to Winberie's, a bright and airy yet warm and comfortable cafe on the corner of Oak Park Ave. and Lake St.
My mom ordered the soup-and-half-sandwich special and chose to substitute French onion for the soup of the day. The soup was served in a sturdy ceramic bowl, crusted over with gooey cheese. Her half sandwich, a grilled ham and cheese on wheat bread, was equally as satisfying. I chose the chicken paillard sandwich, which came open-faced, topped with melted gruyere cheese, baby greens and a few roasted red peppers. The bread underneath was more of a garlic toast, but it stood up well beneath the juicy chicken and melted cheese. It was the perfect lunch: substantial enough to get us through another few hours of architecture viewing but not too heavy to slow us down. Now I'm looking for an excuse to head back out to Oak Park around dinnertime...
