World Bread Day

3rd World Bread Day hosted by 1x umruehren bitte aka kochtopfToday is World Bread Day. Did you know that bread bakeries are typically one of the least lucrative culinary businesses? Chicago bread has come a long way over the last few years. Go out and buy a loaf of fresh sandwich bread for your lunches this week or a crusty baguette to share with your family at dinner tonight --- and support your local baker.

Blogger Kochtopf is hosting the third annual World Bread Day baking round up. Check in over the next few days to browse the pictures and recipes that food blogs around the world have contributed.

A list of my favorite Chicago bakeries after the jump:

Argo Georgian Bakery
2812 W. Devon Ave

Austrian Bakery

2523 N Clark St

Bennison's Bakery
1000 Davis Street (Evanston)

D'Amatos Italian Bakery
1332 W Grand Ave

Fox & Obel
401 E. Illinois

Labriola Bakery

Look for them at farmers markets

Medici Bakery

1331 E. 57th

Red Hen Bread
1623 N. Milwaukee
500 W. Diversey

Also, the Treasure Island grocery stores fly in Poilâne bread from Paris. This is the perfect vehicle for butter and Marmite, if you are so inclined.

Post your favorite Chicago bread bakeries in the comments.
