These Are Not Roaches on Toothpicks, but a Fanciful Holiday Treat
I came across these at a holiday party and wanted to make off with the entire tray. Take a date, split lengthwise on one side, open it up (like a book), smear a small dollop of spiced molasses (i.e. molasses with cinnamon and cloves added to taste) over the center, and place a cube of crystallized ginger in the center, close the date and harpoon with a toothpick. This gussied-up date is far more flavorful than anything you're going to find on the dessert table, and it's a fraction of the calories.
