"This means something, it's something important!"
In the midst of a stack of work, several nights spent on the computer writing until three in the morning, and a pile of laundry not unlike the mashed potato sculpture that Richard Dreyfus lovingly sculpted in Close Encounters of the Third Kind sitting in the corner, I took the time to write a letter. Nothing too imperative to many, but it's a growing concern of mine: Brach's has gotten rid of its Easter "Mellowcreme Pets" candy. I need to know if it's coming back.
While some may be sniffing around Cadbury Creme Eggs at the grocery this time of year, I look forward to soft, flavored molds of sugar. Bunnies! Chickens! Pastel colors! I inherited my love of this stuff from my mother, who would send me a package every spring in college with a post-it note attached. "Enjoy," it would say in her Palmer Method handwriting. In OCD-esqe fashion, I separated the candy by color and had to eat the green ones first (with a side of skim milk). We were also fans of the Thanksgiving "Autumn Mix" edition (which had maple-flavored turkeys and banana indian corn, which I can still find from time to time), as well as the Christmas (stars and trees) and Valentine's Day (hearts, cherubs and arrows) versions.
But they're gone. As the seasons change, I find myself doing the walk of shame down the aisles, and no dice. So tonight, in an agitated moment, I searched online. In an era where I can find used Bowflex machines and postcards of Clara Bow in under a minute anywhere in the world, my favorite candy is long gone.
So I wrote a letter to Brach's. Just a quick, to-the-point message. "Please let me know where I can find Easter Mellowcreme candy. Thank you." If they write back with the bad news that I suspect they'll have, I always have a box of Potato Buds on hand in my pantry.
Update: Brach's responded to my email:
This item was discontinued. Farley's & Sathers review items regularly in order to determine the feasibility of each item offering. Due to the high cost of production for specialty items and the lack of sales, we simply cannot justify the manufacturing of these types of items. The cost to the consumer would not be in line with other items currently available. However, we appreciate your comments!

I've also been looking for mellowcreme holiday candies and, of course, not finding them. Your reply from Bach's makes me sad, but I'm glad you posted the information. What's next? Peeps?
