1 City, 1 Food Drive Plays Give and Take
The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) kicked off its annual holiday food drive today in hopes of collecting over 1 million pounds of food this holiday season to serve the 650,000 folks who rely on GCFD for meals throughout the year. To help inspire those of us who like a more give and take relationship, GCFD has partnered with a few local spots to encourage you to donate.
At Custom House, a recently-ish new concept on the space transformed it into a more urban tavern, with upscale precision under the helm of Chef Perry Hendrix. Bring a nonperishable can of food in when you dine and you'll receive a free appetizer or dessert, of your choice to accompany your lunch or dinner. And since their newest pastry chef studied under Mindy Segel, I suggest you opt for dessert. From December 8-December 25.
Considering how many holiday parties you will probably attend this month and all that you'll imbibe, let me provide one suggestion to help you get through: brunch. Check out River North's Brunch with its responsibly-sourced menu which lists every brunch dish you've ever heard of, literally. Guests who donate five cans of food will receive a free appetizer. From December 12- December 18.
If your holiday shopping brings you along the Clybourn corridor stop by Franks N' Dawgs for a Beet 'n Brat: Bratwurst sausage, beet salad, quince vinaigrette, marmalade, pickled red onion & chevre. Bring in a canned good and receive $0.50 off the price of your dog. From December 1 through December 30.
Most needed items include:
• Beans
• Canned Fruit
• Canned Vegetables
• Cereal
• Chili
• Jelly
• Macaroni and Cheese
• Pasta

• Peanut Butter
• Rice
• Shelf-Stable Milk

If your holiday calendar and home pantry are too full for dining out, and you are still interested in giving, check out the numerous Dominick's locations, public and city buildings on this map to find the nearest collection center near you. Or if cans are still too bulky, go the electronic donation route by hosting your own virtual food drive amongst your friends and family.
