It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
A coworker of mine summed it up beautifully: no relatives. No intrusive questions. No shopping. No obligatory visits full of awkward conversations.
Yes, it's Halloween. The best holiday of them all. Here's a little guide for fun things to do this weekend in celebration:
Tonight
Lottie's Pub (1925 W. Cortland Ave.) sponsors a trip to Statesville Haunted Prison (register at 6pm, bus leaves at 7:30pm; $40 includes trip and house admission); Hamburger Mary's (5400 N. Clark St.) hosts the Rocky Horror Picture Show at 10pm; tickets $15.
Friday
Just stay in and watch Dateline NBC. It's scary enough.
Saturday
Music store/art space Saki (3716 W. Fullerton Ave.) hosts 197BOO!, a high concept throwback to 1972. Music and media shows echoing the tumultuous days of Nixon (Superfly Blaxploitation Horror Megamix, anyone?) will be shown. Event is free and all-ages. If you need something a bit more mainstream, the Fifty/50 (2047 W. Division St.) will be hosting a "Welcome to the Jungle" party beginning at 7pm, with drink specials and a costume contest. Sunda hosts a "Dim Sum in the Dark" event beginning at 5pm. If you're more of the Berwyn persuasion, you've got a Roosevelt Road Zombie Pub Crawl to attend.
Sunday
The Green City Market hosts its Halloween Harvest Ball today at Ravenswood Event Center (4011 N. Ravenswood Ave.), 4-8pm.
Monday
Surely you need to recover with your DVR and clear broth. If not, Revolution Brewery hosts the Samhain Beer Feast tonight ($75, 7pm). A five-course meal paired with Revolution (and Pipeworks) beers.
Tuesday
Small Bar (2956 N. Albany Ave.) hosts Beer Nerd Halloween tonight beginning at 7pm. Lots of beer, costumes and candy will be there, which I imagine will teleport you back to the Halloweens of your teen years that were spent in a suburban basement. Additionally, Atlas Brewing Company (2747 N. Lincoln Ave.) launches its Phantasmagourdia Pumpkin Ale tonight, with Koval Distillery making an appearance as well.
Wednesday
Lula Cafe dons a costume of the Violet Hour (2537 N. Kedzie Blvd., begins 6pm). The Garfield Park Conservatory (300 N. Central Park Ave.) hosts a kid-friendly Creatures of the Night Party complete with a meet-and-greet of nature's spookiest animals (bats, wolves, etc.), activity tables, music and food. Admission $3, event runs 4-8pm.
