Reminder: Gapers Block's Hot Dog Cookoff is this Saturday!

Gapers Block joins forces with Reach Out and Read Illinois this Saturday, July 13, for a food-filled fundraiser: the Hot Dog Cookoff!

Come to the parking lot next to Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., anytime between 2 and 7pm to see what creative dishes our competing chefs have come up with -- and vote on your favorite!

Fat Rice has a General Tso-inspired dish in the works!

Harmony Grill's dog will include jalapeno bacon jam, fried onions and a Flamin' Hot Cheetos glaze.

ManBQue is smoking something. It might be hot dogs.

The Haute & The Dog won't tell us what they have planned, but we know it'll be served from a classic hot dog cart.

• We have no idea what Kuma's Corner is working on. Maybe hot dogs topped with mini cheeseburgers?

Beyond the hot dog creations, your $20 ticket ($10 for kids under 12) also gets you $3 Old Style and Old Style Light tallboys, cornhole/bags games and other fun. Reach Out and Read Illinois, a a pediatric early literacy organization that prepares America's youngest children to read by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together, will hold a raffle for a wide variety of items.

At around 6pm, our special guest judges -- Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's, David "The Food Dude" Lissner and Bruce Kraig, author of Man Bites Dog -- will judge who put the hot dog to the most unique and tasty use.

You'll get a vote too, in the People's Choice award -- and in true Chicago style, you can stuff the ballot box by dropping dollar bills into the vote bucket of your favorite chef. Each buck counts as a vote, and all proceeds go to Reach Out and Read.

The Hot Dog Cookoff runs from 2pm to 7pm, but don't worry if you can't stay the whole time. This is much more about having fun and eating creatively prepared encased meats -- once you've had your fill, feel free to head off to the next event on your busy weekend. We'll post a recap with photos and the winners here on Drive-Thru next week.

Hope to see you there!

UPDATE: We had a blast! Here's a recap of the event.

The State of Food Writing

By Brandy Gonsoulin

In 2009, food blogging, social media and Yelp were gaining popularity, and America's revered gastronomic magazine Gourmet shuttered after 68 years in business. Former Cook's Illustrated editor-in-chief Chris Kimball followed with an editorial, stating that "The shuttering of Gourmet reminds...
