Pumpkin Mania Report
Folks, it's officially fall-- the weather's turned crisp, women are in boots, and Pumpkin Mania has taken over Chicago. Everywhere I look, it's Pumpkin Chai this and Pumpkin Muffin that-- it's enough to make a girl think I should start hoarding them in my apartment before this run on pumpkins leads to fistfights at the farmer's market.
An avid pumpkinphile myself, I keep an eye out for particularly interesting takes on my favorite winter squash that I see around the city this time of year. For instance, check out our own Jeremy Owens' pursuit of the perfect pumpkin soup recipe.
This week's discovery: prosciutto beignets with pumpkin butter, garnished with pecorino and arugula at Perennial Virant. After a brief hesitation over whether having doughnuts for dinner was really a good idea, I gave into this dish and boy, was it a great idea. The beignets were outstanding themselves, but they were clearly just a platform to showcase the superb pumpkin butter--super rich and not too sweet, it was perfect with the savory prosciutto and cheese.
Here's hoping that this season has fewer Pumpkin Spice Lattes and more of these.
