Three Course Brunch at Black Bull
A few months ago, Black Bull failed to impress me with paella reminiscent of minute rice, but my return for its weekend brunch left me on a positive note. The brunch itself followed three courses:
First Course
Housemade Chocolate-Filled Croissants & Palmerita Pastries
Second Course
Torrijas
Spanish French toast, Berries, Sweet Cream
Huevos Rotos
French Fries, Two Eggs Sunny-Side, Jamón Serrano
Omelet
Chorizo, Spinach, Mushrooms, Jamón Serrano, Cheese
Grilled Vegetables
Poached Egg, Tomato, Asparagus, Eggplant, Onion, Mushroom, Pepper, Potato, Spinach, Carrot Mousse, Salsa Verde
Hamburguesa Iberica
Pork Shoulder, Jamón Ibérico, Quail Egg, Rosemary Aioli, Caramelized Onion & Apple Conserve, Grated Tomato, Focaccia
Third Course
French Toast or Churros con Chocolate
The menu leans on the sweet side, so I suggest selecting a savory entrée for the second course. The omelet with chorizo and jamon serrano was well balanced, and even the grilled vegetables with poached egg and salsa verde were surprisingly tasty. The second and third courses are similarly sized, so don't worry if the second course comes out smaller than expected. Choose the French toast if you're feeling indulgent for the third course, or go for the lightly-fried churros. Both were paired with a semi-sweet molten chocolate that was incredibly rich and delicious.
At $25/person, the brunch is an affordable and enjoyable brunch option for those wandering around Wicker Park. The al fresco seating is also good for people-watching and enjoying the elusive Chicago summer.
