Gapers Block Hosts Third Annual Hot Dog Cookoff for Charity August 1
Join Gapers Block for the third annual Hot Dog Cookoff on Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon to 5pm in the parking lot at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., to taste new interpretations of the classic red hot by chefs from Harmony Grill, Wiener and Still Champion, Monti's, ThePizzle.net and two-time defending champions ManBQue.
Participating chefs will start with Vienna Beef hot dogs, but may use them in any way they'd like. Last year's dishes included tacos, Hong Kong-style buns, "Chicago style" dumplings, Buffalo cheese dogs, barbecue and even minty hot dog "chewing gum." We have no idea what they'll come up with this year, but we have a feeling it will go way beyond mustard and relish.

A panel of hot dog experts including hot dog historian Brue Kraig, Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's, David "Food Dude" Lissner, chef Alan Lake and Chicagoist editor Lisa White. Attendees will also get their say with the People's Choice award.
Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for children under 12, and includes tasting portions of all the chefs' creations. Three Lagunitas beers will be on tap for $3 a pint. There will also be a cash bar, raffle prizes, bags (or cornhole, if you prefer), and a DJ spinning tracks. Tickets may be purchased in advance online or at the door.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Reach Out and Read of Illinois, an early literacy organization that prepares America's youngest children to read by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. So join us for some family-friendly food fun in the sun!
