Previously in Fuel: What's the best advice anyone's ever given you?

This question's about advice you give to others.

Ramsin / March 25, 2010 2:45 PM

Take it easy.

Eh Kae / March 25, 2010 2:50 PM

Fuck em if they can't take a joke.

mary / March 25, 2010 2:58 PM

laughter really is the best medicine. just don't get too maniacal about it. people might think you're crazy.

Spook / March 25, 2010 3:30 PM

It's Day Two
of The Communist take over of The U.S. Government.

FEMA Concentration camps are being set up to contain all Patriotic Sovereign Citizens, while they take our guns.

Tune in to get further instructions from The Provesional President of the Republic, Glenn Beck.

When talking to a company to resolve a problem or change service or whatever, ALWAYS get their name and (if possible) employee number.

And have an emergency fund. For emergencies. Even if you can only afford to put a dollar in there a week, do it.

bluejayjen / March 25, 2010 3:49 PM

Don't be afraid to ask (for a discount, bonus, whatever). If you get a "yes" you're ahead, if you get a "no" you're no worse off.

A. Lewellen / March 25, 2010 3:59 PM

Look out for dog $%@!.

Maybe not the best advice but hard to refute.

C-Note / March 25, 2010 4:12 PM

One of the only things you can control in this life is how hard you work.

Mucky Fingers / March 25, 2010 4:43 PM

Someday, for some reason, you will die - so live it up NOW.

kate / March 25, 2010 5:06 PM

whatever you do - do not tell your mother in law how you really feel.

fluffy / March 25, 2010 6:37 PM

who gives a rat's ass what other people think? live YOUR life.

christian / March 25, 2010 10:17 PM

There is no such thing as superheroes, so if you are bitten by a radioactive spider, you are going to die.

charlie / March 26, 2010 7:12 AM

Ride fast, take chances.

holden / March 26, 2010 11:33 AM

Be nice. Work hard.
Take care of yourself.

I teach and say these words everyday.
hopefully they make some sort of impact.

Jimmy Joe / March 26, 2010 2:18 PM

You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil has to be lead.

Spook / March 26, 2010 4:07 PM

while it might be true, that "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted", still, I can guarantee that if you leave a ripe banna, on your desk on Friday, that on Monday you will find it like a tree because it's only as strong as its side, if you think about it, that is, I mean, reallly.

Leelah / March 26, 2010 9:24 PM

This is the advice I give my students for college:
1. No classes before 9 am.
2. Study abroad if you can.

Joann / March 26, 2010 10:44 PM

mind your own business

Dennis Fritz / March 27, 2010 1:59 AM

Don't go breaking your shin on a stool that's not in your way.

Cat / March 27, 2010 3:43 PM

You can't control other people. You can only control your response to them.

Mo / March 27, 2010 10:12 PM

Nothing's permanent. This may not be technically true, but I find myself saying it a lot when people are worrying whether they're making the right choice. I always remind them that if they end up miserable, then they can just make a change. They did it once, they can do it again.

Relatedly, a friend of mine and I had this conversation that has stuck with me:

Me: I'm not sure I made the right decision.
Friend: Well, now you can make the decision right.

spence / March 28, 2010 8:51 AM

The grass is never greener.

Gachupina / March 28, 2010 9:36 PM

Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.
