The hubby and I first fell in love all those years ago to Talking Head's This Must Be The Place & whole U2 Joshua Tree album. Ahhh, vinyl.

Veronica / November 2, 2005 1:13 PM

First crush? Gosh, I don't even know, that was so long ago. I think that may have been before I had discovered my passionate love for pop music. As you may know, I lived in NM where there are no good radio stations.

But first, kinda for-real relationship? Not so long ago. "The Reason" by Hoobastank and "My Immortal" by Evanescence. Both remind me of the breakup. The former because of the lyrics, the latter because it was exceedingly popular. I heard it all the freakin' time and it made me sad.

leah / November 2, 2005 1:16 PM

My first crush & I were at a school rec night when he gave me my first kiss. We were 12 & he was significantly shorter than I. He got on his tiptoes and I remember seeing these pursed lips coming straight at me from about 8" down. And "Oh Donna" by Richie Valens was playing at the time.

Every time I hear that song I see the slow-mo' lips coming up at me and I giggle.

"car" -built to spill

i remember dragging the turntable into the bedroom and singing that song in post-coital bliss early in my last relationship. didn't end well but that memory is still pretty pure.

jen*nee / November 2, 2005 2:50 PM

Don't laugh--"Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors. I caught the love of my life mouthing the words to that song at a party in high school. He was across the room, felt me looking at him, and looked up right when the words "marry me" came on. I melted.
Also, "Take Me Out to othe Ballgame." Same guy. After our Spin Doctor phase, we used to go to a lot of ballgames.

Guns N' Roses - I Think About You.

While my first relationships was but a farce, the second and first real one was defined by our common love for GNR. She was 15, I was 15, I was graduating high school while she was not and we listened to and watched a lot of GNR stuff.

Those were some days (long ago).

mg / November 2, 2005 3:43 PM

i can't think of just one song, so I have to name a couple of albums:

digable planets - reachin'
common - one day it will all make sense

*feeling all warm and fuzzy*

anne / November 2, 2005 3:56 PM

I can't remember what went with the first crush, but my junior year boyfriend in high school I totally associate with the Matthew Sweet song "Sweet Voice" off of the "Girlfriend" album. I used to play it over and over again while we talked on the phone. That is, until he said, "What the hell are you doing listening to one song for the past hour?" Yup, busted. I stopped putting it on repeat after that.

Same boyfriend, on the night we broke up...oh yeah, that was at Prom. I'll always remember the last song they played at the booze free/dance 'till dawn party at the civic center. It was 5:59a.m., and they put on R. Kelly's "Bump and Grind". Now, scamper off to your homes, you little sleep-deprived sober teens! Scoot!

Amy / November 2, 2005 3:56 PM

Summer of 68 - Pink Floyd

loir / November 2, 2005 3:56 PM

Oh yeah, Air Supply! I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you, I knew you were right, believing for so long...

was the heartbreaking soundtrack to my post first kiss, mopey self. We met on vacation, he was from Indiana and thought I was 16, but when he found out I was 13 he let me down gently.

I can remember walking in the halls that fall at jr high and standing under a speaker trying to hear that cheesy love song over the din of my fellow classmates. They were so young, they didn't understand!

When I heard it at the roller rink, I had to go in the bathroom and cry!

Now I think how lucky I was to be kissed for the first time on a beach by a cute 17 year old boy who had the decency to not take advantage of a love struck 13 year old. Todd from Carmel Indiana, thanks!

Ashamed / November 2, 2005 4:13 PM

"If You Leave," Simple Minds

Can't get more self-pitying than that. And, oh, I was. So very much so.

emily / November 2, 2005 4:39 PM

first love: The Cure's "Love Song". i'm surprised nobody mentioned that one yet.

second love: "Earth Angel"

last and final love: "You Don't Know I..." by The Slackers. yep, hubb and i fell in love over some ska.

amy / November 2, 2005 4:59 PM

The albums of Disintegration by the Cure and Louder than Bombs by the Smiths. Just this morning I was listening to a song from Distintegration on my Ipod on the L and it brought me right back to those morose days of sitting plaintively in my bedroom, listening to music, pining for my crush. He later became my first boyfriend, and then eventually I dumped him. But oh, to be 14 in 1989 again...

Emerson Dameron / November 2, 2005 5:28 PM

Nick Cave's Let Love In, in toto. Oddly, it's one of my few high school classics that I can still spin without grimacing.

Erica / November 2, 2005 5:42 PM

Slackers: "I Still Love You." VERY Sweet ska song
Bouncing Souls: "Johnny X." I played this 7" so loud one night when we first started dating that my landlord threatened to evict me.
Bouncing Souls: "Kate is Gr8"
Reverend Horton Heat: "Nurture My Pig"

Funny songs that remind me of him ...
Santana: Smooth (it was soooo played out when we first met and we hate pop music, so it was naturally a song we loved to hate)

Rod Stewart: Have I Told You Lately (the cheesiest song ever. I know Van was the original singer, but Rod is God.

tony / November 2, 2005 6:35 PM

It wasn't my first significant relationship, but I've always associated Air's Moon Safari with one of my ex-girlfriends. The CD still sits on my shelf, but I can honestly say that I haven't listened to it in almost 6 years.

nico / November 2, 2005 8:11 PM

"the letter" - natalie merchant

christian / November 2, 2005 8:45 PM

I'm trying to remember, but that was so long ago. I associate lots of music to first love and such, and my taste in music to my first love; she made lots of mix tapes for me at the time. I guess bands I associate would be more appropriate, Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Smiths and so on.

"If You Leave" by OMD, pretty much the whole "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack.

Leelah / November 2, 2005 9:11 PM

I had a huge crush on this guy in high school and after he finally kissed me... this would be two years later when I was in college, mind... the first song I heard was "Green Shirt" by Elvis Costello. Even now, nearly twenty years later, I think of that guy when I hear it.

R / November 2, 2005 9:35 PM

"I'd die without you," PM Dawn. Such a great song, such a lame guy.

Jason / November 2, 2005 9:53 PM

Lately "Kiss the Canvas" by Drowningman seems appropriate.

And The Smiths, The Cure, Swans when the mood is just right, and so on. You know.

slb / November 2, 2005 10:14 PM

first terrible unrequited crush: "troy" by sinead o'connor and "untitled" by the cure
second one: "good feeling" by violent femmes
first decent relationship turned bad breakup: "baby's got sauce" by g. love and special sauce
next (bad) relationship turned bad breakup: john zorn's naked city album and anything by the boredoms
current 9yr long great relationship: pretty much everything since we live together. but esp. "coolest little monster" by electric frankenstein and black flag's damaged album really bring me back...

Mac / November 2, 2005 10:47 PM

"Little 15"--Depeche Mode

My first serious boyfriend introduced me to Leonard Cohen via "The Future." He was smart and artsy and I still love him (the boyfriend and Leonard Cohen!)

Steve / November 2, 2005 11:31 PM

Cheesy but true: "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. 'Cuz we saw the movie on one of our first dates. I'd frequently segue it into "Train in Vain" on my high school radio shows because I thought the two tunes kinda complemented one another....

Sarah / November 3, 2005 7:54 AM

Ironically, the song I associate most with my first love is "What's Love Got to Do With It" by Tina Turner.

My first successful, love relationship had Moondance by Van Morrison as its theme song.

steven / November 3, 2005 8:29 AM

Bitchin' Camero, Dead Milkmen. Back in high school, during the 'courtship' phase, me and the now ex-girlfriend sat in her driveway at night and sang Dead Milkmen songs. BC was our fave.

steven / November 3, 2005 8:30 AM

That's Bitchin' Camaro

Ashamed (Again) / November 3, 2005 8:45 AM

Totally conflated two self-pity songs. Christian's right: "If You Leave," is OMD. What I was really thinking of was "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds (from Breakfast club?). But I played the OMD one over and over and over again, too. My college years were the lame parts of John Hughes movies. Sigh.

shermann / November 3, 2005 8:57 AM

Stevie Wonder - I Believe (When I Fall in Love it will be Forever)

I got in a fight with my partner and went to bed angry. When my alarm went off the next morning, this song was playing.

Pete / November 3, 2005 9:01 AM

"You're My Blessing" by Miracle Legion.

N S Warmonger / November 3, 2005 9:04 AM

"Flies on the Windscreen," with the line "Death is everywhere, there are flies on the windscreen" by Depeche Mode playing on 97X as my first girlfriend in high school broke up with me. Pathetic, oh so maudlin, and yet so approprpriate - for a 15 year old ... Compounding that, my first girlfriend in college split up with me. I had to drive her home at that point. I turn the key, the radio kicks on, "I know you want to leave me, but I refuse to let you go ..." blares out. "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," by the Temptations. Lesson? Turn off the damn radio when you're talking with your soon to be ex-girlfriend.

libby / November 3, 2005 9:10 AM

my first boyfriend dedicated to me "patience" by GnR during the 'hot 9 at 9' radio show. i felt super famous when that happened. my first intense young love? the tune was "crystal ship" by the doors. then, my friends, we spiral into uncool territory where the path of once loved but lost is littered with dave matthews band songs... these days there are too many to mention. i think that means i've found the one.

Oh Mario...unrequited crush of a lifetime. Remember when we drove around in your BMW 2002 and you blasted "Brilliant Mind" from the Some Kind of Wonderful Sountrack? That was pretty much the highlight of my 16th year.

"You're at the stage - you want empty words said in everybody's writing...I want to know you're secrets - but you are not telling."

Roni / November 3, 2005 10:23 AM

Really, adolescence is such a dramatic time.

That album still gets me, though.

jen / November 3, 2005 2:34 PM

i can't recall any memories between first loves and specific songs. but i do know that during dramatic moments in my life, "wave of multilation" by the pixies (the slow version from the pump up the volume soundtrack) and "with or without you" by U2 would often find themselves on repeat on my CD player.

He wasn't my all time crush, but I'll never forget "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" by Boys II Men. I was infatuated with a basketball player (me and most girls I knew) my sophomore year. At one of the school dances, they cut off the fun music for a slow song, the last dance. As I went to exit the floor (having no date, let alone a boyfriend), he came up to me and asked me to dance. Lets just say I was floored.

When I break down and cry
Don't need no reason why
Baby, Baby
You’re my angel...come and save me tonight.

And then sadly, a few weeks later...

Can't Cry Hard Enough (For You to Hear Me Now) by The Williams Brothers

Gonna open my eyes
And see for the first time
I let go of you like
A child letting go of his kite

There it goes, up in the sky

I had a huge crush on this girl who used to love Tears for Fears, so I bought that album and then in choir class we had to disect a song of our choice to demonstrate we knew verse, chorus, bridge, etc. I picked "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." We ended up "dating" for one week and we kissed in the library and then she dumped me, but it was cool. She was way out of my league. She definitely "ruled my world for those three weeks or so.

I have a similar story but replace Tears for Fears with Terence Trent D'Arby.

My wife and I fell in love while Sloan's Twice Removed was in heavy rotation. I think she married me for introducing her to Nick Drake. He's the secret weapon.

Well, "How will I know" by Keke Palmer. The lyrics are so true and describes exactly how I feel.

"I know there is something that I'm feeling
But I can't quite put it into words
It's got me hopin',
Hopin' that you feelin' it too
Cause for me it's a first
Does anyone truly understand what real love is about?
Don't say I'm too young to know what's real
My heart skips a beat
I can hardly breathe
Every time that he comes near

It's so amazing almost crazy how
I'm thinkin' 'bout you lately
Tell me, how in the world did it come to this
It took me by surprise
When you opened my eyes
To hopefully show me what love is

Chorus:
How will I know
Could it be the butterflies I feel whenever I'm with you
How will I know
Or the way I'm at a loss of words I can hardly keep my cool
How will I know
Everyday now stop stop stop I keep thinkin bout you
How will I know I'm in love x2

Somebody tell me
Will I ever know x2

It's so amazing almost crazy how
I'm thinkin' 'bout you lately
Tell me, how in the world did it come to this
It took me by surprise
When you opened my eyes
To hopefully show me what love is x2

Somebody tell me
Will I ever know? x2

If it ain't love
Then tell me why am I always searching for excuses to call?
And if it ain't love
Then tell me why am I always hopin' to see him in the halls?
And if it ain't love
Somebody tell me why I lie awake at night starin' at the walls? (Starin' the halls)
And if this isn't love
Then I don't really need it cause, I'm happy here with no love at all"

That's just some of it, but I love this song so much!

A few other good crush/love songs are:
1. "Crushed" by Rosette
2. "Love This Way" by Eden's Crush
3. "Close To You" by The Carpenters (Old, I know but, their lyrics are so good!)
4. "Close To you" By DJ Bounce (So cute!)
5. "Colors of the Rainbow" By DJ Skeptyk ( I had this song, stuck in my head for weeks!)

I love all of these songs for two main reasons, the lyrics and the music itself are great!

Well, he's not my first crush, but right now I can say I feel like:
~Taylor Swift - Teardrops On My Guitar
AND
~Rosette - Crush
I'm trying to think of more, but I can't cause he's in my head right now.
