Update: Journalist Charged with Espionage in Iran
Last month, we told you about a petition on Facebook that asked Iranian officials to free U.S.-Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi, who has been held in Tehran's Evin prison since January.
Saberi, 31, has ties to the Chicago area. She received a master's degree from Northwestern's Medill School in 1999 and has been reporting in Iran for several news outlets for six years.
Sadly, it looks like she might need more of our help.
Iranian officials first accused her of filing stories without press credentials, but on Wednesday, according to Reuters, Iranian prosecutors accused her of espionage, saying she passed information to the U.S. under the cover of a journalist.
State Department Spokesperson Robert Wood has called the charge "baseless" and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also spoken out on the matter, saying, "I will, as will the rest of the Department, continue to follow this very closely and we wish for her speedy release and return to her family."
According to the Associated Press, Saberi's father plans to remain in Iran until his daughter is released. You can follow developments on Saberi's case at the Free Roxana Saberi blog, and on Twitter.
