More Destruction of the Chicago River
Trash leftover by careless beach dwellers already plagues several Chicago beaches in the summer and fall. The weather is finally getting warmer, and it looks as if people are bringing their bad habits to the Chicago River, which has suffered from severe industrial pollution for years. I recently strolled along the riverfront path on my lunch hour from State Street to Michigan Avenue and was disheartened to see wrappers, plastic bottles and discarded food all along the bank and in the river water. This garbage adds to the 1.2 billion gallons of sewage that is dumped into the river every day, according to Friends of the Chicago River.
