Event to Celebrate Book 'Mayor 1%: Rahm Emanuel and the Rise of the 99%'

Haymarket Books will host a celebration launch and discussion Tuesday evening for Chicago journalist Kari Lydersen's new book, Mayor 1%: Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Rise of Chicago's 99%.

Chicago Reader columnist Ben Joravsky, Grassroots Collaborative executive director Amisha Patel and Chicago Teachers Union organizer Brandon Johnson will join Lynderson for a panel to discuss her latest work.

Lyderson is a Chicago-based journalist who covers energy, the environment, labor, public health and immigration issues. She teaches at several Chicago colleges and has written four books.

Her latest work unpacks Mayor Emanuel's "war against the public sector." Lyderson details Emanuel's policy agenda that has transformed Chicago's Democratic machine into an increasingly privatized one.

The author also addresses the powerful community of activists who have united in opposition to the mayor's vision for remaking Chicago.

"Mayor 1% provides the reader with the ability to understand the hard line, neoliberal mindset that blinds the man to the harsh realities of entrenched poverty and disenfranchisement."
--Karen Lewis, President, Chicago Teachers Union

"Lydersen's book demonstrates the type of thorough investigative journalism we need in Chicago to keep all politicians and public servants accountable."
--Tom Balanoff, President, SEIU Local 1 and SEIU Illinois State Council

The panel starts tomorrow at 7pm at Haymarket Brewery (737 W Randolph St.). A book signing and discussion will follow. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP on Facebook.

Substance, Not Style, the Source of Rahm's Woes

By Ramsin Canon / 2 Comments

It's not surprising that some of Mayor Emanuel's sympathizers and supporters are confusing people's substantive disputes with the mayor as the effect of poor marketing on his part. It's exactly this insular worldview that has gotten the mayor in hot... More...
