MODChicago - Maintaining Our Cool

MODChicago is holding their fifth annual "Our Way of Thinking" MOD Weekender, "Maintaining Our Cool." The Weekender serves as a way to bring fans of 60s music from all over the country to Chicago in celebration of mod culture. The festival starts on Thursday night with a 9pm-2am "Meet and Greet with the Elite" at Delilah's wherein DJs will spin and you'll be treated to a live set from New York's Mod Fun. On Friday night Sonotheque hosts a Mod Soul Dance Party with DJs from both coasts. On Saturday night the Note hosts the main event with the Mod All Nighter, featuring DJs from Germany, Spain, Norway and the US. Erica Jong @ Hopleaf

One of fiction's most celebrated and notorious female writers, Erica Jong, reads and discusses her work tonight at the Hopleaf. Author of the seminal Fear of Flying, Jong's new book Seducing the Demon: Writing for My Life is an autobiographical account of her books, husbands and lovers. Join Women & Children First in welcoming Jong at the Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark St. The 7:30pm reading is free and is preceded by a 6-7pm cocktail reception, tickets for which are $60 and include an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, an autographed copy of the book and a reserved seat at the reading. Urgh! A Musical War @ Holiday Club

The legendary 1981 New Wave music film Urgh! A Musical War will be screened this evening prior to Planet Claire, the regular New Wave DJ Session at Holiday Club (4000 N. Sheridan). Amazingly enough, the screening is free, so if you want to see the likes of Devo, The Police, Gary Numan, The Cramps, Wall of Voodoo, X, Gang of Four, The Go-Go's, and many many more, this is your evening. The screening begins at 8:00 PM sharp; be there or be not.

FOUND magazine @ Intuit

FOUND magazine returns to Chicago to promote the publishing of a second FOUND magazine book, an all-new collection of found notes, documents, drawings and other things that people have lost. Also appearing will be Frank Warren from Postsecret, who will be (according to the FOUND people) shot from a cannon. Don't want to miss that, do you? Gospel Music Festival @ Millennium Park

The summer music festival season kicks off with this three-day celebration of local, national, and international Gospel music. Festivities begin at 4 PM this afternoon and continue till 9:30 PM; tomorrow and Sunday, hours are 12 N to 9:30 PM. Free. For more information, including performance schedules, visit the website.

Southkore Fest

Southkore Fest, the first-ever all Latin Punk festival, kicks off tonight at 3057 W. 26th St., featuring Pesadilla Social, I Attack, Pkdores, La Armada Roja, Los Sobrios Emputados, No Slogan, Sin Orden, Huasipungo, Juventud Crasa and Tras de Nada. Doors will open at 8pm, music starts at 9pm. All ages. Admission is $10 at the door or $8 in advance -- tickets to both Friday and Saturday are $18/$15 in advance. Teddy Troops Invasion! @ Rotofugi

Forty Chicago-based artists take on the blank vinyl DIY Teddy Troops bear toy by German graffiti artist Flying Fortress in the new exhibit at Rotofugi, 1953 W. Chicago Ave., tonight from 7pm to 11pm. Complementary beer, DJ Tobias spins. Free. More info here.

Dollar Store

The Dollar Store returns for another set of writings inspired by items from a dollar store. Reading tonight are Charles Blackstone, author of The Week You Weren't Here, Sharon Greene, artistic director of the Neo-Futurists, and former Dollar Store host Sean Gardner.
