Chicago Bike Show

In preparation for the many awesome opportunities you will have to ride your bike in the coming months, go visit the Chicago Bike Show this weekend at Navy Pier to see extreme stunts (although getting past the throng of tourists there is stunt-like enough), shop for bike gear, and attend seminars like Pilates for Cyclists and tips for commuting to work on two wheels.

Denison Witmer/Rosie Thomas @ The Beat Kitchen

There'll be some surprises at this show, as Rosie Thomas and Denison Witmer take the stage at The Beat Kitchen. Look out for the special guest appearance by Rosie's comedic, karaoke-loving, alter ego Sheila Saputo. The music on display will be a pleasing blend of alt-folk and indie rock. These two are great friends, who collaborated on Rosie's new record These Friends Of Mine, so hopefully you'll see them play together as well. It'll be an early show starting at 6:30pm, more info here.

THE2NDHAND / Geek and Dork Tour @ Quimby's

THE2NDHAND hosts a reading by a group of authors traveling from Minneapolis to NYC on what they're calling The Geek and Dork Tour. Reading tonight are: Todd Taylor of Razorcake and Gorsky Press; Jennifer Whiteford, author of Grrrl; and zine publisher Mike Faloon. Special guest at today's reading: Jonathan Messinger of Featherproof Books. The reading happens this afternoon at Quimby's (1854 W. North) at 4:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public.

Cola Wars @ Empty Bottle

Second to last show for local math-rock wunderkinds Cola Wars before a planned exodus to California. With Antelope and Coltrane Motion. Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western. 9:30 PM, $8, 21+.

Free Capoeira Master Class in Pilsen

Today at 2pm, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Capoeira Club will offer a free master class with internatonally respected teacher and performer Mestre Caboquinho. The course takes place at Colibri Studio, 2032 W 18th Street and will conclude with a Roda, or party, at 8pm. Contact nwhits@saic.edu for more information.

WLUW Record Fair and Other Delights

Springtime is a wonderful time of year to clean out your record collection and start fresh. Perhaps this is your opportunity to start collecting 60s British pop albums? Whatever your desires, WLUW 88.7 FM will fulfill them at their fifth annual record fair, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, at Pulaski Park Fieldhouse (1419 West Blackhawk). The record fair is a benefit for WLUW, and offers more beyond stacks of vinyl and CDs--art and poster vendors, performances from local bands and DJs, a Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution Championship, and food will also be available. If you are interested in being a vendor, contact them for details.
