Free Dinner and Screening of Matewan

Join the Journal of Ordinary Thought in their presentation of the John Sayles film Matewan.
Well-intentioned labor leader Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper) arrives in Matewan, West Virginia, to unionize the coal mine workers. Matewan was nominated for an Academy Award in was the winner of the Independent Spirit Award, 1988. The movie will be accompanied by a free dinner and a discussion by Bill Ayers, Professor of Education at University of Illinois at Chicago. Presented with the Jane Addams Hull House, 800 South Halsted, in their Residents Dining Hall space. Go Tell It On the Mountain in Voice & Song

The Chicago Public Library celebrates their Spring 2007 One Book, One Chicago selection, James Baldwin's Go Tell It On the Mountain, with a spoken word and song performance. Members from Steppenwolf Theatre Company will perform dramatic readings, the Pilgrim Baptist Church Choir will perform selections mentioned in the text and Dr. Danielle Allen of the University of Chicago will discuss the author and the book's themes. The Yes Men @ Loyola

Andy Bichlbaum, one of the Yes Men will be at Loyola University today, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. 6400 N. Sheridan Rd., Sullivan Center, Galvin Auditorium. The Yes Men are a pair of satirists who made the self-titled documentary The Yes Men, in which they impersonated represenatives of the World Trade Organization while making appearances on television and at conferences and told the wicked truth about the organization. Bichlbaum will be showing video footage of their recent projects.

Klaxons @ Schubas

One of NME's 2006/2007 loves, Klaxons, makes their Chicago debut at Schubas in support of their first LP, Myths Of The Near Future. This electronica/rock hybrid (dubbed "new rave") has received critical acclaim for its music, videos, and live performances. Progressive Educators Conference

Baker Demonstration School presents its Third Annual Progressive Educators Conference: Higher Order Thinking Through Integrated Curriculum. The conference will examine the ways in which educators plan, prepare, teach and assess integrated curricular units in a progressive setting. Providing children with opportunities to examine issues in depth in an integrated format allows them to develop their analytical, evaluative, and cognitive skills. See schedule here (PDF).
