Manifest

Thankfully, schools are realizing that the people who have to sit through sluggish graduation ceremonies deserve something more compelling than a three-hour speech by Vaclav Havel. Manifest, Columbia College's annual undergraduate and graduate student show, starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m. at 600 South Michigan, and includes street performances, an art walk, readings, and more.

Sweet Smell of Success @ Music Box

"I love this dirty town." The Music Box presents a one-week showing of the Burt Lancaster-Tony Curtis classic Sweet Smell of Success on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the film's release. Oscar Shorts @ Film Center

If you missed the program of Oscar-nominated short films that played at the Gene Siskel Film Center shortly before this year's Academy Awards program, the films will be screened again this evening at 6:00 PM and again at 10:00 PM. The Film Center will be screening both the live-action nominated short films (the winner in this category was West Bank Story from the US) and the animated shorts (the winner was The Danish Poet from Norway & Canada). Looptopia

Looptopia is a dusk-till-dawn, multiple-event celebration in the Loop. Come see and/or participate in theatrical performances, concerts, dance parties, art exhibits, films, yoga, a scavenger hunt and more, almost all for free, from 5pm till 5am Saturday. View the full schedule here or here.

Mother of a Good Time

In honor of upcoming Mother's Day, the artists and artisans at the Cornelia Arts Building are opening their doors for a party and reception in their various studios, free to the public. Look for artists on both floors! The party is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. this Friday, May 11. The Cornelia Arts Building is located at 1800 W. Cornelia at Ravenswood.

Lonnie Holley opening reception @ Intuit

SAIC student film, video & audio @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center presents a two-day presentation of the work of graduating students of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. You can expect to see hand-drawn animation, computer graphics, 16mm film, digital video, and probably many more. Today's presentations will be at 2:30 PM and 8:00 PM, and there is another presentation scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. Sherman Alexie @ Borders

Sherman Alexie, author of such notables as Ten Little Indians and Reservation Blues, comes to Borders Michigan Ave. to discuss his latest work, Flight. The Narrator Record Release Party @ The Hideout
