Bookslut reading @ Hopleaf

Bookslut presents the latest in its series of monthly readings. For Public Consumption literary event @ Hyde Park Arts Center

BoyGirlBoyGirl (Chicago authors/actors Diana Slickman, Edward Thomas-Herrera, Stephanie Shaw, David Kodeski & Susan Karp) appear as part of the Hyde Park Center's For Public Consumption group show. Poet and video artist Richard Fox is the host for the evening. The performance happens tonight from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Hyde Park Arts Center (5020 S. Cornell); the event is free.

Daniel Johnston @ Lakeshore Theater

Daniel Johnston, the outsider musician who was the subject of the recent documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, plays two shows tonight at the Lakeshore Theater. As part of the ComEd-sponsored Play Chicago series, singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins performs this evening in the Chicago Room. Local Media and Human Rights

Ever wonder why some things just don't get the coverage you think they deserve in Chicago's media? Come hear award-winning media professionals talk about the challenges and efficacy of writing on human rights abuses in our city. The panel, "Local Reporting and Human Rights Abuses in Chicago: A Conference" will be moderated by Steve Edwards, host of 848 on WBEZ. Panelists include Jamie Kalven–independent journalist and founder of the Invisible Institute, John Conroy—staff reporter for the Chicago Reader, Beauty Turner—assistant editor and reporter of Residents' Journal and Salome Chasnoff—executive director of Beyondmedia Education.

Voices from Home: Local Authors Speak

The Friends of the Blackstone Branch Library presents another session of their monthly Voices From Home series. Creative Living in the City

Today's seminar is entitled "Build New Parks … and People Will Come: How Parks Increase the Real Estate Value of a Neighborhood." Bring your lunch to the Cultural Center and listen to real estate expert Paul W. Boyd discuss the history of Chicago’s parks and how the regional and lake front parks were key to neighborhood development and the economic well-being of a community.
