Transmission, the Gapers Block music site, hosts its weekly night at the Five Star Bar. DJ Brad Owen spins punk, new wave and other indie faves, Transmission staffers run around with cameras, and the bar offers a $3 beer special. Tonight is the first night of the Chicago Jazz Fest. A ticketed performance starring Herbie Hancock will be held at Symphony Center. Click here for tickets and information. After tonight, the events move to Grant Park, and they're totally free. This year's Jazz Fest Artist-in-Residence is noted bassist (and father-in-law of Jack Black) Charlie Haden.

Electric City Rockfest kicks off with the Bronx headlining a free show at Double Door. Hailing from Los Angeles, the Bronx has blown up over the last few years with a fiery live show, a passion for 70s punk rock, and a major influence from the late 90s Southern California rock'n'roll scene.
