The Man on the Flying Trapeze @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center presents a month-long salute to the comedy stars of the 1930s; specifically, the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields and Mae West. Today's film is another W.C. Fields classic, The Man on the Flying Trapeze, with Fields starring as a man desperately trying to get to see his favorite wrestling star, Hookalakah Meshobbab. Wow! The film screens this evening at 7:45 PM. Tickets are $9, $7 for students, $5 for Film Center members and $4 for SAIC students. Film Center: 164 N. State. (312) 846-2600.

Eileen Favorite @ Women & Children First

Eileen Favorite's debut novel takes a look at what happens when literature's greatest heroines - Emma Bovary and Franny Glass, for example - take refuge from their plots in a Midwestern bed and breakfast. Favorite will read from and discuss The Heroines tonight at Women & Children First, 5233 N. Clark St. Free at 7:30pm; call 773-769-9299 for more information.

Tomorrow Never Knows Festival: Bobby Conn, NOMO, Baby Teeth, Hylozoists @ Schubas

Take one part bowie glam, a scoop of mainland funk, one outnumbered but talented local trio, a dose of quaint Canadian orchestral pop and three parts "there are so many members the drummer is sitting on the trumpeter's lap", and you'll get the line-up gracing Schubas come this Thursday. If the sweet sounds of the Hylozoists don't make you wander off to find love, nor does Baby Teeth's disco/rock time machine teleport you away, nor do you find yourself danced out of commision after NOMO's big beats, then you'll last long enough to two new songs from a Bec-Rec single by the the Conn-man and company. Mister Joshua DJs upstairs. $15 dollars, show starts at 9.
