Watch the entire syrup-making process from tree to table today at the Chicago Park District's Maple Syrup Festival, which will be held at the North Park Village Nature Center (5801 N. Pulaski) from 10am to 3pm today.
Performing Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and Schoenberg's Transfigured Night. A pre-concert talk with conductor Francesco Milioto precedes the program at 2:30 pm. Recently called "one of the best additions to the city's scene" by classical music critic Marc Geelhoed, the New Millennium Orchestra has been breaking down barriers of classical music stereotypes since their first multimedia performance in 2005 on Earth Day. They have collaborated with diverse musicians ranging from members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and eighth blackbird to Michael Kang (The String Cheese Incident) and DJ Spooky. Exhibitors from the U.S., Canada, China, Israel and Western Europe offer thousands of original vintage posters for sale dated from the 1890s-1980s. Styles include classic Art Nouveau Belle Epoque images and increasingly popular Art Deco and Modernism posters. Chicago Sinfonietta celebrates the contributions women have made in classical music in honor of International Women's Month, dedicated to the economic, social, cultural and political achievements of women. Maestro Paul Freeman graciously hands over the baton as Cuban-born Tania Leon takes the podium as guest conductor. Leon leads the Sinfonietta in Ellen Zwilich's rich and dramatic Prologue & Variations, followed by the eclectic Irlande, poeme symphonique scored by Augusta Holmes. Also performed is Leon's Horizons.
