The Chicago contingent of Nike's Human Race 10k kicks off at Soldier Field tonight at 6:30pm; packet pick-up starts at 2pm. Fall Out Boy performs after the race. Registration costs $35; register here by 10pm Aug. 30.
The Chicago-based alt-country/blues-punk singer and guitar-slinger Slow Gun Shogun plays a headlining set at the Abbey this evening. While his new 7-song CD -- Eve, Adam & the Apple -- features Mr. Shogun working mostly in one-man band mode, he'll most likely be joined by a full band for tonight's show. Also on the bill for the evening are Six Gun Lullaby (from Nashville), Fil, and Leaf Bird open. 3420 W. Grace (at Elston). Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. Doors open at 8 PM, and the show starts at 9 PM.
HotHouse -- Chicago's Nonprofit Center for International Performance and Exhibition -- teams up with Chicago Samba today to celebrate Brazilian music, dance and culture at Fizz Bar & Grill. Promising live music, dance lessons, Capoeira performance, Carnival dancers, Portuguese poetry and more! "The best in the Midwest, and the next best thing to being in Brazil!" 3220 N. Lincoln. Humboldt Park's 15th Annual Fiesta Boricua -- the Midwest's largest Ethnic Music Festival -- will take place on Division between Paseo Boricua's giant metal flags. Three stages will feature top talents in Salsa, Plena, Reggaeton and House plus over 100 food, arts and crafts vendors. The all-day event will also include a health fair, skateboard demo area, art gallery and cultural performances. Everyone's invited to come celebrate Chicago's Puerto Rican community!
