The Old Town School of Folk Music presents a free screening of the 1999 documentary Genghis Blues, which shows the singer-songwriter Paul Pena becoming an unlikely star in the obscure musical world of Tuvan throat singing. The free screening happens this afternoon at 1:00 PM in the concert hall at the school (4544 N. Lincoln).
Holstein Park (2200 N. Oakley) is the site of the 4th annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, which takes place today from 2-5pm. Pastrysmiths Gale Gand of Tru and Koren Grieveson of Avec will judge the competition, which is limited to 75 entries ($15 fee). Music, pumpkin decorating, a silent auction, and a $1,000 raffle are also on the bill. Event benefits Friends of Holstein Park.
As part of the Holes 10th anniversary tour, author Louis Sachar will visit Adventure Stage Chicago at Vittum Theater for a special reading of his well-known young adult novel. He will also autograph books and answer audience questions. Adventure Stage Chicago will run a stage version of the novel from November 16-December 18, however today is Sachar's only planned visit to Chicago. Paris Review editor Nathaniel Rich comes to the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater for a special reading of his debut novel, The Mayor's Tongue. Jonathan Messinger of Time Out Chicago and Featherproof Books will talk with Rich about his work. A viewing of Featherproof's exhibition of Constance Eakins book covers and an after-party hosted by Flameshovel Records will follow the reading. Presented by Chicago Public Radio. The Chicago International Film Festival runs until October 29 at several theaters across the city. Box office is at the AMC River East 21 at Illinois & Fairbanks and the AMC at 600 North Michigan; you can also buy tickets online.
The Dick Herron Memorial Bike and Walk honors and brings awareness to fallen bicyclists and pedestrians, about 200 of which are killed each year in Chicago. The family-themed, donation-based event raises money for the unique, educational after-school Build and Ride bike program for at-risk Chicago Public Schools students. 9:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in Lincoln Park at the North Avenue pedestrian bridge.
