Big Read Kick-Off

Join Columbia College as they kick off the Big Read and celebrate this year's selection of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. The event will feature a new documentary about Bradbury's works with librarian, teacher and literacy advocate Esme Raji Codell serving as keynote speaker. Copies of the book in English and in Spanish will be passed out. Free and open to the public, 6pm-8pm, at 1104 S. Wabash in Columbia College's Film Row Center, 8th floor. "Spying and Crying" @ The Art Institute

Susan E. Alcock, Professor of Classics and the Director for the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University will deliver a lecture entitled "Spying and Crying: Ancient Modes of Watching the Ancient World" in the Rubloff Auditorium, Art Institute of Chicago, 111 South Michigan Avenue. Homeschool Day @ Spertus Museum

The Spertus Museum's Gray Children's Center is hosting a day of programs designed for homeschooled and unschooled children of all ages. Programs include learning about Jewish ritual and practice, American history and the Great Migration, and a discussion about the Holocaust and other genocides, and activities include age-appropriate art and writing. The event takes place at the museum (610 S. Michigan Ave.) from 10am-3:30pm and costs $8 per child, with one free adult admission per participating child.
