Invent the Future Workshop @ Armitage Baptist Church

How should the region plan for the year 2040? This summer, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will hold dozens of free public workshops called GO TO 2040 "Invent the Future". Information you contribute at these meetings will help CMAP develop a preferred scenario that will best reflect the region's desired future. Today’s workshop takes place from 7-9pm at the Armitage Baptist Church, 2451 N. Kedzie Ave., Chicago. Visit goto2040.org for more information and to register.

LaidOffCamp

LaidOffCamp comes to Chicago after a successful run in San Francisco and New York. LaidOffCamp is an ad-hoc gathering of unemployed and non-traditionally employed people (including freelancers, entrepreneurs, and startups) who want to share ideas and learn from each other. It features an open, participatory discussion forum designed to connect, empower, and educate community members. LaidOffCamp Chicago is free, but does require registration to attend. 1-5pm, Loyola University Chicago's Water Tower Campus (25 E. Pearson-Kasbeer Hall, 15th Floor).

Grant Park Music Festival Opening Night

Chicago's acclaimed Grant Park Music Festival, led by Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar and Chorus Director Christopher Bell, opens its 75th season today at 6:30pm The opening night concert features Maestro Kalmar leading the GRAMMY®-nominated Grant Park Orchestra and internationally-renowned pianist Stephen Hough through Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, Key's patriotic Star Spangled Banner, as well as one of classical music's greatest hits, Pictures at an Exhibition composed by Modest Mussorgsky. Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Free.

Adrian Tomine & Seth @ Quimby's

Graphic novel greats Adrian Tomine and Seth will be at Quimby's to celebrate the release of their new books. Tomine will discuss his new editions of Shortcomings and 32 Stories as well as Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifiting Life, which he edited and designed. Seth will discuss his new graphic novel George Sprott 1894-1975 and his work editing and designing The Collected Doug Wright: Canada's Master Cartoonist. They will also take questions from the audience and sign their books. The event is free at 7pm, but I'd recommend you get there early as the two will surely draw a crowd.
