Today is a National Day to Defend Education from privatization and budget cuts. Several organizations such at the Graduate Employees Organization, SEIU Local 73 and the Against Budget Cuts Coalition at the University of Illinois Chicago will be hosting events.
The first event is debate with UIC administrators at noon in Room 605 Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted. However the administrators have already said that they will not attend. The coalition will then rally in the UIC Quad and march at 2pm.
Kenzaburo Oe, winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in literature, will deliver the annual East Asian Studies' Najita Lecture at the University of Chicago's International House (1414 East 59th Street) at 4pm.
The event is Free and open to the public.

The documentary Handmade Nation will be screened today at Columbia College (600 S. Michigan, Room 921) at 3:30pm. In attendance for a discussion will be the film's director, Faythe Levine, and author & researcher Betsy Greer. The event is free and open to the public. I'm There: A Birthday Celebration for the City of Chicago is meant to give a celebratory real-time, ground level look at the current state of three pivotal neighborhoods in Chicago--Wicker Park, Wrigleyville and Pilsen. Each neighborhood will be represented visually by a photographer and musically with a DJ from each 'hood. Each photographer and DJ collaborated to take unique shots for a one night only photography exhibit that is meant to produce a truly unique and personal journey into their neighborhood and lives as influential artists in the city. America's Dog will be providing food, 404 Wine Bar will be sampling some spectacular wines, and Bleeding Heart Bakery is putting together a cake of epic proportions. There will be a hosted Old Style bar from 7-8pm with a donation-based wet bar after that. Admission is free from 7-11pm. Chicago Art Department is located at 1837 S. Halsted.
Forgotten Chicago celebrates the city's 173rd birthday tonight at 8pm at Cunneen's, 1424 W. Devon Ave., with a silent auction of Chicago-related books, photos and ephemera. As a bonus, the first 80 guests will receive a free book from Lake Claremont Press. More info here; RSVP on Facebook.
The Oriental Institute is hosting a Tastes of Lebanon dinner at Fattoush Restaurant (2652 N. Halsted St.), where owners Samer and Lina Elakhaoui will prepare and explain several traditional Lebanese dishes, including fattoush, their signature salad. Enjoy mezze (appetizers), a sampling of entrees, and desserts. Diners will also receive a recipe to take home with them. The dinner takes place from 7-9pm. The fee is $49 for Oriental Institute members, or $54 for non-members, and it includes food, tax, gratuity, and wine. Pre-registration is required and can be done online or by calling (773) 702-9507.
