In dance music, Chicago and Detroit once shared a lot of talent and ideas between the two. Friday, March 12th at Smartbar, D3: Deconstruct, Discover Detroit Art and Music Series hopes to revive this exchange. Put together by local techno promoter VOLATL, house label D'Lectable Music, and art collective Prak-sis, D3's opening night features Detroit native and second-wave techno innovator Stacey Pullen, D3 founder Lady D and locals Max Jacobson, Max Loomis and Jay Cho, as well as multimedia art and performances. Smartbar is located at 3730 N. Clark. Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 8pm and is 21+.
Today at 7pm, the UIC Student Outreach Services presents the University's annual production of Eve Ensler's "Vagina Monologues," a theatrical performance to celebrate women - and end violence. Profits from the show go to local agencies, groups and organizations involved in the struggle to end violence against women. Hosted at the Theatre, Education, Performing Arts & Social Work (EPASW), 1040 W. Harrison Street. Cost is $8 for students & UIC community, $10 for the general public. Join volunteers from UIC School of Public Health (1603 W. Taylor St.) to help assemble health promotion kits for distribution by Community Outreach Intervention Projects' (COIP) outreach workers. COIP, housed in the UIC School of Public Health, provides high risk populations with information and resources to prevent and help treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Open to the public and featuring self publishers from around Chicago, the Midwest, as well as zinesters from across the country, the Chicago Zine Fest is an independent event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work. The goal is to make DIY zine-making accessible, highlighting the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact, and swap skills through tabling, lectures, and workshops. This weekend long event organized by Equality Across America will bring together LGBTQ activists from across the midwest to Columbia College to figure out how to move closer to full gay, lesbian, trans, bi and queer rights. Registration is $15.
