Hie thee to the Innertown Pub tonight for a quickie. Several, actually. Mary Hamilton and Lindsay Hunter host the monthly Quickies! flash fiction reading series. Each reader has four minutes to read a complete work of prose. "No poetry. No excerpts. No cheating." This month's series features readings by James Tadd Adcox, Alex Bonner, Chris Bower, Jason Bredle (Standing In Line for the Beast), Barry Graham (The National Virginity Pledge: Short Stories and Other Lies), Allison Gruber, Elizabeth Ellen (Before You She Was A Pitbull), Devin King (Clops), Davis Schneiderman (Drain), Rebekah Silverman and Jill Summers. The Innertown Pub, 1935 W. Thomas; free, 21 and over, 7:30pm
The Gene Siskel Film Center continues their Quentin Tarantino retrospective with a screening of the 2007 Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez project Grindhouse, featuring two films by both directors along with a bunch of amazing fake trailers in between the two main features. The complete film and trailers will be screened tonight starting at 7:30pm. See the Film Center Website for full details and a complete schedule. Film Center: 164 N. State. (312) 846-2600.
From MCA: "This summer, the popular performative art exhibition Here / Not There returns, and asks how participatory actions within structured events can encourage a collective act of creation. The viewer, rather than the artist, is the focus as guests are encouraged to participate in performing and creating works." Free tonight at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave.
Every Tuesday during the summer the Museum of Contemporary Art presents free live jazz concerts from some of the city's most legendary and innovative musicians. Tonight's performance features Mwata Bowden. Grab some friends and a blanket for a relaxing evening on the garden lawn, or make a night of it with a reservation at Puck's. Snacks and beverages, including wine and seasonal cocktails are available for purchase. 5:30-8pm. 220 E. Chicago Ave. Free.
