Chicago Nerds Sci Fi & Fantasy Book Club @ Noble Tree Cafe

The Chicago Nerd Social Club presents its 12th sci fi & fantasy book club meeting this evening at Noble Tree Cafe (2444 N. Clark). Tonight's book is Daemon by Daniel Suarez. The event runs from 6:30pm to 8pm, and admission is free. See the Chicago Nerds Website for full details.

Dina Maccabee @ The Whistler

San Francisco-based violinist and chanteuse Dina Maccabee recently collaborated with experimental-leaning Chicago mainstay Toby Summerfield to create the sterling new effort Who Do You Suppose You Are. In preview of the fall release, courtesy of local label Antephonic, Maccabee, Summerfield and co. will be appearing at The Whistler this evening, playing perfectly composed pop songs set against a menagerie of instruments and melodies. Summerfield pulls double duty this evening, playing with opener Health & Beauty. The Whistler, 2421 N. Milwaukee Ave. 9pm. Free.

Javelin @ Edible Audible Picnic

Grab your lunch and take it to Pritzker Pavilion at noon for an Edible Audible Picnic. The Brooklyn based, beat-making duo, Javelin consists of cousins, Tom Van Buskirk and George Langford. Their self-released CDR, Jamz n Jemz, was selected as "Best New Music" by Pitchfork and the duo recently released their proper full length debut album No Mas on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Also performing this summer at Lollapalooza, Javelin have already performed with Mos Def, remixed The Very Best, and toured the UK with the band Yeasayer.

Ratchet @ Skylark

Ratchet is a weekly jazz and creative music series at Pilsen's Skylark. Tonight the Ernest Dawkins Trio plays, featuring Dawkins on reeds. It's always free to get in, but if you like what you hear, be sure to drop a few dollars in the hat when it gets passed around! 10pm. 2149 S. Halsted. 21+
